SIGN Logic Model

Evaluating SIGN guideline implementation

Outcomes planning and evaluation, or contribution analysis, is one way of assessing the impact of implementation activities and finding out whether implementing a guideline is improving outcomes.

Contribution analysis helps to understand how a piece of work made a difference to someone, somewhere, as one part of a large, complex system by:

  • providing a pragmatic way to plan and evaluate the impact of a piece of work
  • focusing on outcomes – particularly on the end or long term outcomes
  • involving stakeholders in the process
  • uses a theory of change to map out the pathway from the work to the intended outcomes
  • uses evidence to identify the pathways.

Key tools in outcome planning and evaluation are:

1) Logic model

2) Monitoring & evaluation plan

3) Outcomes focused reporting template

A generic guideline implementation logic model has been developed as a resource for guideline implementers and is available in MSWord format to allow adaption to fit local needs.
