Applicability
The appraisal criteria within this domain are concerned with ensuring that the guideline is not only valid, but can be implemented into practice. This involves considering the potential barriers to implementation, including the resource implications of the guideline recommendations and the reaction of guideline users to changes in organisational structures or working practices.
It has been shown that passive dissemination of guidelines is unlikely to lead to changes in clinical practice. Therefore a number of related interventions, including educational activities, audit tools, and patient information may be required to facilitate implementation of the guideline. Potential barriers and incentives to implementation of the guideline may be identified by pilot testing or widespread consultation as part of the development process of the guideline.
